If you’re lucky enough to unearth a real tonewheel organ on the second hand market, then well done. If it also happens to be a Hammond B3, then you’re basically the boss of everything. If you can take it to the stage, then the universe is yours, my friend. Well, kind of – these sonic beasts are notoriously sensitive and difficult to… carry. So, good luck with that. Since we do live in the future, however, there is another way. The Crumar MOJO-CL is a virtual tonewheel organ – that’s not to say that it isn’t a considerable piece of very physical hardware – but open the hood and you’ll find that the sound is generated by software alone. Going on the look and feel of this instrument, this is pretty hard to believe.
Features of the Crumar MOJO-CL
First of all, this Mojo weighs just 18kg. This is featherweight when you consider the fact that a B3 weighs in at a meaty 140kg (even without the stool and pedals). So, for the relatively slimline 18kg, you’re getting a whole lotta organ. Two octaves over two waterfall keyboards that literally glide beneath the hands; drawbars, complete with that characteristic click; rotary and vibrato; in fact any tonewheel organ related feature you’d care to name is provided by the Mojo-CL. The satisfying vintage look of the wooden cabinet is thankfully finished with a DIN-MIDI and a USB-MIDI port, making studio integration as simple as it gets, and as flexible as it gets, since besides virtual organs, you get a MIDI keyboard with waterfall keys – not something you witness every day. In short, for less than £100 per kilo, you get genuine prog-feel and a just as genuine tonewheel-monster in your very own studio, living room, and even on stage.
