Arturia’s strategy in designing this modular synth was clear: design a matrix capable of thousands of possible routings. Link a set of 16 modulation sources to 16 modulation destinations, then the data encoder will helpfully calculate the number of routings and display the result on the specially developed Electronic ink (E-Ink) screen. You could also use this highly intelligent and flexible matrix to recall one of no less than 256 presets, and program and recall your own bespoke presets.
The MatrixBrute: The Power of the Modular System
Every patch can be saved and stored as a preset, so there’s no need to fuss with re-setting or searching for that sound you stumbled across, or making hasty recordings in case you lose it altogether. The potent 64-step sequencer with dedicated step, accent, slide and modulation options is also insanely useful – using this section alone, you can weave a cohesive piece, all using an analogue synth. Throw in some analogue effects using the stereo outputs, so you’re totally assured that your signal will remain fully analogue, whether using the chorus, delay, or flanger effects, each of which come with 5 modes that can be specified as matrix destinations.
A Fat Box of Tricks
Various arpeggiator and sequencer modes can be selected and applied, opening up near unlimited sonic potential. The MatrixBrute also comes loaded with a Steiner Filter with 4 modes and a Ladder Filter that can be manipulated to shape punching bass and leads, both of which have been upgraded so that 12dB/oct and 24dB/oct slopes can be played with. The drive control thickens up the bass until it’s almost tangible, while the VCF’s and VCO’s offer the kind of superior quality you only expect. Each of the 3 VCOs has been equipped with a sub-oscillator and Saw, Pulse and Triangle waveforms with highly unique wave-shapers. And, just to be sure, the MatrixBrute has been fitted with MIDI, USB and CV ports.
